What is this medicine used for?
Susceptible strains
Streptococci, Staphylococci, Clostridium difficile, Diphtheroids
Usage
- Pneumonia, Sepsis, Pulmonary pyosis, Empyema thoracis
- Severe infections which have failed to respond to the penicillins or cephalosporins
- Enterocolitis and antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis
(Treatment by oral administration)
How much and how often should you use this medicine?
1. Adults: The usual intravenous dose is 500mg every 6 hours or 1g every 12 hours.
2. Adults with impaired renal function and the elderly
Dosage adjustment must be made in patients with impaired renal function. In premature and the
elderly, dosage reduction may be necessary to a greater extent than expected because of decreasing
renal function.
