What is this medicine used for?
- Hypertension: As monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
- Angina pectoris: Long-term prophylaxis
- Cardiac arrhythmias: Disturbances of cardiac rhythm, including supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias
- Myocardial infarction (MI): Treatment of hemodynamically stable patients with definite or suspected acute MI to reduce cardiovascular mortality
- Adjunct to treatment of thyrotoxicosis
- Prevention of migraine
How much and how often should you use this medicine?
For Hypertension
- Initial dose: 100 mg daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses
- Dosage may be increased at weekly (or longer) intervals until optimum hypotensive effect is achieved.
- Usual effective dose range is 100-400 mg daily, usually divided into a twice-daily dosage.
- Once daily administration of 200 mg may be effective for maintenance therapy.
For Angina Pectoris
- Initial dosage range: 25-50 mg twice daily
- Dosage may be increased at weekly intervals until optimum control of angina is obtained or there is pronounced slowing of the heart rate.
- Usual effective dosage range is 100-400 daily given in 2 divided doses.
Contraindications
- Reserpine: increased frequency and severity of extreme lowering of blood sugar
- Verapamil, Diltiazem: increased risk of severe lowering of blood pressure and slowing of heart rate
- Digitalis: slow heart rate
- Nitroglycerin: increased risk of severe lowering of blood pressure
