What is this medicine used for?
For type 2 diabetes mellitus not manageable by diet alone.
How much and how often should you use this medicine?
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
The usual initial dose is 2.5 to 5mg daily given as a single dose 15 to 30 minutes before breakfast. Dosage may be adjusted at intervals of several days by amounts of 2.5 to 5 mg daily up to a maximum of 40 mg daily. Doses larger than 15 mg daily are given in 2 divided doses before meals.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with ketoacidosis and in those with severe infection, stress, trauma, or other severe conditions where glipizide is unlikely to control the hyperglycemia, insulin should be administered in such situations.
Warning and Precautions
Precautions:
Patients with impaired renal and/or heptic function may have slower metabolism and excretion of glipizide, hypoglycemia may occur when caloric intake is deficient, after severe or prolonged exercise, when alcohol is ingested, or when more than one glucose-lowering drug.
