What is this medicine used for?
RM Meropenem is indicated for the treatment of bacterial meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis and penicillin-susceptible isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
How much and how often should you use this medicine?
Adult : IV Susceptible infections 0.5-1 g 8 hrly via IV inj over approx 3-5 min or infused over approx 15-30 min. Meningitis; Cystic fibrosis 2 g 8 hrly infused over approx 15-30 min. Skin and skin structure infections 500 mg 8 hrly via IV inj over approx 3-5 min or infused over approx 15-30 min. Intra-abdominal infections As meropenem trihydrate: 1 g 8 hourly via infusion over approx 15-30 minutes or via inj over approx 5 minutes.

Intravenous
Intra-abdominal infections
Adult: As meropenem trihydrate: 1 g 8 hourly via infusion over approx 15-30 minutes or via inj over approx 5 minutes.
Child: ≥3 mth ≤50 kg: 10-20 mg/kg 8 hourly via infusion over approx 15-30 minutes. Alternatively, via inj over approx 5 minutes for dosage up to 20 mg/kg. Max: 1,000 mg every 8 hours for 4-7 days.
Intravenous
Skin and skin structure infections
Adult: 500 mg 8 hrly via IV inj over approx 3-5 min or infused over approx 15-30 min.
Child: ≥3 mth ≤50 kg: 10 mg/kg 8 hrly via IV inj over approx 3-5 min or infused over approx 15-30 min. Max: 500 mg.
Intravenous
Cystic fibrosis, Meningitis
Adult: 2 g 8 hrly infused over approx 15-30 min.
Child: ≥3 mth ≤50 kg: 40 mg/kg 8 hrly via IV inj over approx 3-5 min or infused over approx 15-30 min. Max: 2 g.

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to meropenem, other carbapenems. History of anaphylactic reaction to β-lactams (e.g. penicillins, cephalosporins).
