What is this medicine used for?
Treatment of infections due to penicillinase-producing Staphylococci such as skin and soft tissue infections and infections of the respiratory and genitourinary tracts.
How much and how often should you use this medicine?
Usual adult dose: 500 mg (4 teaspoonsful), QID
Children: up to 2 years old: 125 mg (1 teaspoonful) QID 3 to 10 years old: 250 mg (2 teaspoonsful) QID
Contraindication:
Patients with known hypersensitivity to cloxacillin; First trimester of pregnancy
Warnings and Precautions:
Care is necessary in giving Cloxacillin in patients with poor renal function.
Undesirable Effects:
Hypersensitivity: Rash and chills. GI: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and flatulence. Renal: Rarely, transient microscopic hematuria. Hematologic: Eosinophilia and hemolytic anemia. Hepatic: bilirubin.
Interaction w/ other medicaments:
Cloxacillin may decrease the efficacy of estrogen containing oral contraceptives.
