What is this medicine used for?
For the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, particularly those of the urinary, respiratory, and gastro-intestinal tracts.
How much and how often should you use this medicine?
Children: up to 2 years old: 125 mg (1 teaspoonful) QID 3 to 10 years old: 250 mg (2 teaspoonsful) QID
Contraindication:
Hypersensitivity to Trimethoprim and Sulfonamides. Pregnant and nursing women. Infant less than 6 weeks of age. Patients with megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency.
Warnings and Precautions:
Give with caution to patients with impaired renal and hepatic functions, possible for folate deficiency, severe allergy or bronchial asthma. Drug interaction: Prolong prothrombin time of patients receiving warfarin. May increase the hypoglycemic response of sulfonylurea. May impair the renal excretion of methotrexate. Prolong biologic half-life of phenytoin. Decrease hepatic clearance of phenytoin. Drug/Laboratory Tests: May elevate serum creatinine, bilirubin, and alkaline phosphatase.
Undesirable Effects:
Gastro-intestinal disturbance (mainly nausea and vomiting) and skin reaction are the most common adverse effect. There have been occasional deaths especially in elderly patients, mainly due to blood dyscrasias or severe skin reaction.
